Finally, it's finished! This I knew was going to be a giant undertaking but I'm so happy that I stuck with it. I learned a lot about painting rocks in this piece, believe me.
When thinking of this piece, I wanted to do something with Mermaids and Pirates. That's all that kept coming to my head. At first, I was thinking about these villainous Pirates storming a Mermaid's cove to plunder the treasure and steal the Mermaids for whatever sick reason they wanted them. But then I started thinking, if Mermaids were a real creature, they probably encounter Pirates regularly and maybe even prey upon them. I mean they really can't seduce a fish, but they can easily force a young lust Pirate boy to leap into the ocean to be with them- only to be devoured and torn apart by the pod. So that's where this piece headed. At first glance, it looks like these Pirates are killing these poor innocent Mermaids at their Cove that is currently in low-tide. However, looking around the entire canvas, you'll notice dead Pirates; some with missing limbs, some that are only limbs, and one that is just a fleshy skeleton. These are the meals of the Mermaid pod that resides in this Cove. They collect the artifacts their prey was holding onto at the time of their demise, and share the feast with one another. These Pirates aren't attacking for these treasures and trinkets of old. They're attacking for revenge. Revenge for their fallen mates. Sidenote: I watched all 5 of the Pirates of the Caribbean films multiple times while painting this. Particularly the first and second one; combined 11 times.
