"Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him." Matthew 2:2 A few weeks late, but finally got around to finishing my Christmas painting and the second piece of my new “Illustrating The Bible” series. I love the classic paintings of the Nativity scene featuring the Baby Jesus glowing; shimmering as the new hope of the world lighting from the darkness. In my version; we have the traditional setting- a manger within the desert with the wisemen and Shepards coming to observe the glory of their savior. Also featured amongst the animals of the farm are three white doves; symbolizing the heavenly host of archangels (Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael) coming in earthly forms to view the birth of the Messiah. Also viewing in the wings of a Raven is Lucifer; the fallen archangel looking down at the baby that would someday soon become his nemesis. This combination of Earthly and Heavenly figures being brought together adds another focal point for the baby Jesus. He's the brightest figure in their eyes, as well as our own when looking at this piece. But beyond all the Biblical poetry, I really wanted to capture the moment of love’s glow between mother and child.
